Box Score

MIDDLETOWN, R.I. - Senior Amanda Broughton (Plymouth, Mass.) scored a pair of goals to lead the Nichols College field hockey team to a 4-0 Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) victory over Salve Regina University Wednesday night at Gaudet Field.

Juniors Jenn Townsend (Wethersfield, Conn.) and Avery Orszulak (Springfield, Mass.) also scored as the Bison (4-10, 4-4 CCC) have now won two-straight and three of their last five. The loss drops the Seahawks to 6-7 (5-3 CCC).

Late in the first half, Broughton controlled a losse ball off a penalty corner and slid it past Seahawks junior goalkeeper Murphy McCann (Westerly, R.I.) to give the Bison a 1-0 lead. SRU sophomore Abigail Tepper (Foxoboro, Mass.) had a pair of scoring chances in the final minutes of the half but NC junior netminder Molly Melanson (Simsbury, Conn.) turned both shots away to keep the score 1-0 in favor of Nichols.

Senior Lisa Bucci (Irvington, N.Y.) had a pair of scoring chances early in the second half for the Seahawks, but was unable to tie the game. Junior Jenn Townsend (Wethersfield, Conn.) potted her third of the season at 44:01 to double the Bison lead, and Orszulak's goal off a rebound at 57:20 made it 3-0 Nichols. Broughton capped the scoring with her fourth of the season at 67:27 when her shot from the top of the circle sailed past McCann.

Melanson finished the night with eight saves as she moved to 4-10 with the win. McCann recorded three saves. Each team was credited with eight shots.
