Late Goal By Cummings Propels Bison Past Fitchburg State, 1-0

Box Score

FITCHBURG, Mass. – Graduate student Kimberly Cummings (Woodbridge, Va.) finished off the Bison's only corner kick opportunity of the match as Nichols edged Fitchburg State 1-0 on Thursday evening in a women's soccer non-conference showdown at Michael P. Riccards Field. The Bison improve to 3-4-2 while the Falcons slip to 1-9.

With 4:56 remaining in regulation, senior Erica Silvia (Middletown, R.I.) sent a corner kick to Cummings who deposited the ball in the net for what proved to be the game-winning goal.

First-year goalkeeper Melissa Toomey (Saugus, Mass.) turned away a game-high seven shots in her first career victory and first career solo shutout.

Fitchburg State held a slim 8-5 advantage in shots and took the only corner kick in the opening half. In the second period, both squads took five shots apiece and were awarded one corner kick each. Seven different Bison took a shot as sophomores Alyssa Tosti (Douglas, Mass.) and Michelle Gardner (Ayer, Mass.) led the way with a pair of attempts for the visitors.

The Bison travel to Gordon on Saturday for a 1:00 p.m. CCC matchup.
