Castleton Tops Women’s Hockey in Overtime, 2-1

Box Score HARRISVILLE, R.I. (Feb. 4) – Castleton junior Jade Werger connected on a penalty shot 17 seconds into overtime to propel the Spartans to a 2-1 overtime victory at Nichols on Saturday night in an ECAC East women's ice hockey matchup at Levy Rink. The Spartans improve to 7-12-1 on the season and 6-7-1 in league action. Nichols dips to 6-14-1 and 3-9-1.

Until the game-ending tally, all the offense came in the first period. First-year Talia Hohmann collected a pass from classmate Alyssa Bufis and sent it past the goalie's glove at 10:55. With 4:20 remaining in the opening stanza, senior Meagan Hulbert won the faceoff and the puck found the stick of rookie Molly Howard who sent the shot in from the slot.

Nichols maintained the advantage outshooting the Spartans 31-26 in regulation as Castleton had the only two opportunities in the brief extra session. Each team went 0-for-4 with extra personnel.

Rookie Paula Stepehens picked up the win turning away eight shots in just over 15 minutes of relief and junior Katharyn Dembrowski made 22 saves. Tori Gianformaggio stopped 26 shots for the Bison.

Nichols welcomes Division I Holy Cross on Friday at 7:40 p.m. while Castleton hosts Southern Maine at 4:00 p.m., also on Friday.
