Beacons Second Period Outburst Dooms Bison, 6-1

Box Score

Burrillville, R.I. – Sophomore Kayla Kiernan (North Smithfield, R.I.) led UMass Boston with two goals and classmate Alyssa Sullivan (Medford, Mass.) pitched in with a pair of assists as the Beacons downed host Nichols, 6-1, in a penalty free ECAC Women's East hockey matchup on Saturday night at Levy Rink. The Beacons earn their first win of the season and improve to 1-1-0 overall and in the league while the Bison slip to 1-2-0 on the year and 0-2-0 in conference action.

Senior Emily LaRosa (Weymouth, Mass.) scored her first goal of the year as her shot from the left faceoff dot found the back of the net at 10:54 in the opening period. Sophomore Angela Dandreo (Swampscott, Mass.) helped setup the scoring opportunity. UMass Boston held a 13-8 advantage in shots on goal through the first 20 minutes of play.

Over a span of 44 seconds in the middle frame, the Beacons lit up the scoreboard three times. The spurt began at 5:24 as junior Kelly Sharlow (Potsdam, N.Y.) scored her first of the year, and what proved to be the game-winner, with a shot from just inside the blue line. Sophomores Emma Valli (Eastham, Mass.) and Liz Figueroa (Wethersfield, Conn.) helped classmate Emily Federspiel (Plano, Texas) put the visitors ahead 3-0 just 15 seconds later. Kiernan capped outburst with a quick goal at 6:08 off a feed from Sullivan. Nichols closed the shots on goal margin courtesy of a 14-10 edge in the second period.

Sophomore Taylor Brown (Winthrop, Mass.) had a great chance to put the Bison on the scoreboard with just under 11 minutes to play as she fired a laser that went just to the left of the net. Sophomore Talia Hohmann (Marina, Calif.) responded 36 seconds after Beacon sophomore Kelsey MacIsaac (Durham, N.H.) deposited a tally shortly after a faceoff with 9:28 remaining in the contest. Kiernan and Sullivan teamed up once again at 15:29 for the sixth and final Beacon goal of the evening. The Bison had a slim 11-10 lead on shots as the two squads each had 33 shots on goal on the night.

UMass Boston freshman Casey Schaejbe (Arlington, Mass.) evened out at 1-1-0 as she made 32 stops for UMass Boston. First-year Nia Kelly (Cary, N.C.) drops to 1-2-0 with a 14 save outing while sophomore Tori Gianformaggio (Huntington Beach, Calif.) turned away 13 shots in relief for the Bison.

Nichols ventures to Biddeford, Maine on Saturday, November 10 for a 3:00 p.m. non-conference game at University of New England. The Beacons continue ECAC Women's East play with a pair of home contests next weekend beginning with a 4:00 p.m. game against Holy Cross on Friday.
