DUDLEY, Mass. – Boston Red Sox Senior Advisor to the President/CEO, Dr. Charles Steinberg, will visit Nichols College to speak to students on Sunday, November 4 at 6 p.m. at Daniels Auditorium.
Dr. Charles Steinberg rejoined the Red Sox in February, 2012 following two years as Senior Advisor to the Commissioner of Baseball for Public Affairs, this after spending the previous two as Executive Vice-President/Marketing and Public Relations (CMO) for the Los Angeles Dodgers.
“We are delighted to have Dr. Steinberg come to Nichols College to talk to our students about his career path in the baseball industry,” said Nichols College Employer Relations Coordinator Cheryl Alderman. “He actually started his career with an internship working in the office for the Baltimore Orioles. He was also with the Red Sox when they won the World Series Championships in 2004 & 2007. His stories will definitely make everyone in attendance smile!”
During Steinberg's first tour of duty with the Red Sox, he Steinberg served as the club's Executive Vice-President/Public Affairs from 2002 through 2007. He was responsible for the club's public and community relations, ballpark entertainment, television and video production, fan services, and advertising. Focused on the fan experience at the ballpark and in the community, he helped create the Fenway Ambassadors, Red Sox Scholars, and the Fathers Day Catch at Fenway Park. He also helped orchestrate the club's tribute to Ted Williams, Opening Day Ceremonies (including the presentation of World Series rings in 2005), and Rolling Rallies after the World Series championships in 2004 and 2007.
Prior to joining the Red Sox, Steinberg held a similar position with the San Diego Padres from 1995 through 2001.Before moving to San Diego, Steinberg spent 19 years with his hometown team and AL East rival Baltimore Orioles, starting as a 17-year-old intern from Gilman School. Working in the public relations department, he became the statistician for Hall of Fame Manager Earl Weaver and began his association with Larry Lucchino (now Red Sox President/CEO), his mentor, whom he followed to San Diego and Boston.
Each of the four franchises for whom Steinberg has worked set attendance records during his tenure.Steinberg earned his bachelor's at the University of Maryland and his doctorate at Maryland's Dental School. While continuing his work in the front office, he also became team dentist. He is a founding and charter member of the Academy for Sports Dentistry.
An amateur musician, he has composed songs that have been recorded by Marilyn McCoo & Billy Davis, Jr. and others. He played “Take Me Out to the Ballgame” on Fenway Park's organ during Jimmy Buffett's 2004 concerts, was part of a group that sang on the Dropkick Murphy's song, “Tessie,” and had a cameo with Drew Barrymore in the Farrelly Brothers' hit, “Fever Pitch.” He received an Emmy Award for the television production of the 1998 National League Champion Padres and a Telly Award for the video of the 1989 Orioles.
