Jenn Townsend (Wethersfield, Conn.) scored a pair of goals and freshman
Meghan Dombkowski (Sagaponack, N.Y.) racked up a goal and two assists to propel the Nichols College field hockey team to a 5-1 win over Western New England in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) action Saturday afternoon at Golden Bear Stadium.
Senior
Emily Widdison (Greenfield, Mass.) potted her 20th goal of the season as the Bison improved to 10-6 on the season and 6-2 in the CCC. Senior Shelby Van Huysen (Killingsworth, Conn.) scored the lone goal for the Golden Bears, who slipped to 5-12 (0-8 CCC).
Dombkowski recorded her fourth goal of the season at 24:50 to give the Bison a 1-0 lead. Later in the half, Townsend pounced on a rebound off Dombkowski's shot and buried her fifth goal of the season.
Van Huysen's goal early in the second half cut the Golden Bears deficit to 2-1 before Nichols reeled off three-straight goals to cap the scoring and seal the win. Townsend's second goal of the afternoon off a feed from Dombkowski at 45:33 pushed the Bison lead to 3-1 before freshman
Emily Broughton (Stoneham, Mass.) converted a pass from sophomore
Rachel Dalrymple (Belvidere, N.J.) into her fourth of the year at 61:11. Widdison's wrapped the scoring when she grabbed the ball out of a scramble in front and beat senior goalkeeper Kaitlyn Hall (Pawtucket, R.I.) with less than three minutes remaining.
Sophomore
Molly Melanson (Simsbury, Conn.) was called on to make one save and notched her 10th win of the season. Hall, meanwhile, was credited with 12 saves. Nichols outshot Western New England 26-5.
The Bison return to action on Tuesday with a 7 p.m. contest against University of New England at Vendetti Field – a game which will be webcast on
www.nicholsathletics.com. The Golden Bears head to Endicott for a 6 p.m. contest on Tuesday.
