Greg Strootman put Nichols on the board with a shorthanded goal in a 3-1 defeat Friday night to SUNY Brockport, 3-1, in a men's ice hockey non-conference matchup at the Tuttle North Arena. Senior
Jacob Rinn recorded a rare goalie assist in the effort.
The Bison (3-10-1) and the Golden Eagles (6-9-2) went scoreless for the first 20 minute of play. Both squads went 0-for-2 on the power play while Nichols began the second period with a full two minute advantage.
Strootman broke the stalemate at the 4:40 mark to give the Bison a 1-0 lead. He was assisted by Rinn and first-year defenseman
Chris Gularte. The hosts evened the contest 4:04 later on a goal by Steve Sachman. Nichols had three extra-man opportunities as the Golden Eagles had a pair.
Pat Hayden scored what proved to be the game-winner at 8:45 in the third as Brett Jendra tacked on an empty net marker with 33 ticks left on the clock. Both clubs had a pair of power plays in the final stanza.
Nichols outshot Brockport 38-27 as Rinn stopped 24 shots for the Bison.
The squad heads to Hobart on Saturday for a 4:00 p.m. faceoff.
