Women's Hockey Edged at New England College, 1-0

Box Score HENNIKER, N.H. (Feb. 5) – Nichols College senior goaltender Melissa Mansfield (Ronkonkoma, N.Y.) made 42 saves, but the Bison were edged at New England College, 1-0, in an ECAC Women's East game Saturday afternoon. The Bison, who out-shot the Pilgrims in the final frame, dip to 4-16-0 overall and 3-11-0 in league games. New England College improves to 9-6-5 overall and 8-3-3 in conference after snapping a six-game winless streak.

Mansfield held the Pilgrims scoreless in the opening frame, fending off 21 shots in her first start since January 15. Nichols was afforded three power-play opportunities in the stanza, but shots from Mary Fehr (Leamington, Ontario) and Megan Gerein (Dubuque, Iowa) were handled by New England College netminder Teraysa White to keep the Bison off the scoreboard.

Chelsea Torrico scored what proved to be the game-winner at the 7:28 mark of the second period, off an assist from Sam Hippern. On Nichols' next power play, Fehr and Hannah Tardif (Laconia, N.H.) had opportunities, but White denied the Bison again.

Nichols held a 12-10 shot advantage in the third, which featured all five-on-five action until the last 57 seconds when Nichols pulled Mansfield in favor of the extra attacker. Emily Larosa (Weymouth, Mass.) won the final faceoff with 17 seconds left, but New England College held on for the win.

Cheryl Pitts (Wakefield, Mass.) and Mandy Manopla (West Palm Beach, Fla.) won the bulk of the faceoffs for the Bison, with Pitts finishing 11-for-20 and Manopla posting a 10-for-18 mark.

Nichols finished its road trip holding opponents scoreless in five power-play opportunities. The Bison return home to play their final home games against Holy Cross and Salve Regina. Nichols hosts the Crusaders on Friday, February 11th at 7:40 p.m. and takes on the Seahawks Saturday, February 12th at 4:40 for Senior Day.
