Johnson & Wales Slips By Women's Hoops, 56-52

Bison start two-game homestand Thursday

Box Score Providence, R.I. (Dec. 6) – The Johnson & Wales University women's basketball posted a 56-52 victory against Nichols in a non-conference contest at the Harborside Recreation Center on Tuesday evening.

Sophomore Jenna Juron led the way for Johnson & Wales with 17 points and three rebounds while senior Katurah Andrews had 14 points and a team-best eight rebounds in the win for the Wildcats.

Junior Hayley Zophin led the way for Nichols with 14 points and four rebounds while senior Chelsea Shaughnessy added 10 points and three boards for the Bison.

Nichols controlled the action early and took the 17-9 lead on a jumper by freshman Sarah Whitestone with 9:41 left in the first half.  JWU then used an 8-4 run, capped by a jumper by sophomore Samantha Hendrick to cut the lead to 21-19 with 3:47 on the clock.  The visiting Bison took the 28-21 lead into the locker room at halftime after shooting 52.0% from the field while forcing the Wildcats into 14 first-half turnovers.

Johnson & Wales chipped away at the lead in the opening stages of the second half and took their first lead of the game when a layup by Andrews made the score 40-39 with 11:30 remaining in the contest. The Wildcats continued to build on their lead and took the 49-39 lead on a conventional three-point play by Juron with 6:47 left in the game. Nichols cut the lead to 55-52 on a jumper by Shaughnessy with 17 seconds on the clock. A free throw by Juron with just over one second on the clock sealed the 56-52 win for the Wildcats.

With the win Johnson & Wales improves to 2-3 for the year while Nichols falls to 1-5 on the season. Nichols closes out the semester with a pair of home games, hosting Suffolk Thursday at 7 p.m. and taking on Connecticut College Saturday at 1 p.m.
