Women's Ice Hockey Opens 2011-12 Campaign With 2-2 Tie at UMass Boston

Hohmann and Nadeau net first collegiate goals; Bufis adds pair of assists

Box Score BOSTON, Mass. (Nov. 5) – First-year Talia Hohmann and classmate Kerri Nadeau each scored in their collegiate debut as Nichols and UMass Boston played to a 2-2 tie on Saturday afternoon at Clark Athletic Center. The Bison begin the season 0-0-1 overall and in the ECAC East while the Beacons move to 1-2-1 on the young season and 0-1-1 in conference play.
 
Hohmann netted the Bison's first tally of the season at 14:05 in the first period. She would be assisted by sophomore Courtney Vallee and rookie Alyssa Bufis.
 
The Bison tacked on another goal as Bufis and Nadeau combined efforts to help Nichols regain the lead with a power play goal at 5:33 into the second stanza. Beacon rookie Kayla Kiernan netted a goal with assists from fellow freshmen Angela Dandreo and Jess Salisbury at 5:52 to pull within one. 
 
Nichols maintained a 2-1 edge until freshman Taylor Donners found the back of the net at 13:08 in the third period. Senior Brittany Usmail and sophomore Kelly Sharlow helped setup the game-tying marker.
 
Sophomore netminder Francesca Palazzo collected 28 saves for the Bison as junior Jami Cudmore made a game-high 29 stops for the Beacons.
 
Each team had six power play chances with Nichols capitalizing once while the Bison held a slim 31-30 lead on shots.
 
Nichols is back in action tomorrow with a visit St. Anselm at 2:00 p.m. in a rescheduled contest from Friday night.
