Curry Tops Women's Hoops in CCC Opener, 66-52

Wegrzynek, Zophin shine in second half

Box Score DUDLEY, Mass. (Nov. 30) – Curry College junior Julia Scrubb scored 24 points to lead the Colonels to a 66-52 victory at Nichols Wednesday evening in the Commonwealth Coast Conference opener for both teams. Curry picks up its first win of the season to move to 1-4 overall, while Nichols will look for its first win of the season Saturday at Western New England College.

Scrubb, who finished just shy of a double-double with nine boards, finished 9-of-11 at the free-throw line and was joined in double-digit scoring by Kylie Beltz with 16, and Hailey Rafferty with 10. Both Beltz and Rafferty pulled down eight rebounds.

First year Alexis Wegrzynek led Nichols (0-4) with 13 points. Junior Hayley Zophin scored five and added seven rebounds in the second half, and sophomore Kasey Pelletier dished six assists.

Scrubb hit a three-pointer with nine minutes left in the opening half to tie the game at 15-all, and used an and-one hoop to give Curry the lead for good. On the Colonels' next possession, Carolyn Houston hit another three-pointer and the visitors built up a five-point lead by the break, 32-27.

Ashley Assarian hit a three-pointer early in the second half to send the Colonels on a 20-5 spree that saw them take their largest lead of the game at 55-34 with eight minutes remaining. The Nichols defense held Curry to only one field goal for the remainder of the game, while Wegrzynek poured in 11 for the Bison.

Curry commanded a 45-28 rebounding advantage, holding Nichols to eight offensive boards, while scoring 14 second-chance points off 19 of their own. The Bison used a deep bench to score 23 points and formulated 11 points in transition to Curry's two.

Nichols is back in action on Saturday in a 1 p.m. CCC game at Western New England. Curry hosts Southern Vermont tomorrow in a 7 p.m. non-conference game.
