Box Score WENHAM, Mass. (Oct. 15) - Looking to avenge an earlier season, 3-2 loss to the Bison of Nichols College, the Fighting Scots were once again bested by the same score, this time in overtime, to move to 2-4 in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) play.
Nichols'
Chelsea Correia put her team on the board early after besting the Gordon defense and keeper Becky Smith in the ninth minute for the 1-0 lead. With the Bison controlling much of the possession and coming forward to post seven more shots on goal throughout the half, Smith turned away five and the Gordon defense came up with two defensive saves to keep the game at 1-0 heading into the break.
Capitalizing again in the early minutes of the second,
Emily Widdison netted a solo effort just two minutes into the half to extend Nichols' lead to 2-0. Despite the deficit, the Scots persisted with a more aggressive offensive front of their own, netting a goal in the 50th minute when Brittany Hawkins buried an unassisted shot to close the gap to 2-1. Then, in the closing minutes of the game, midfielder Karli Balmer stepped up to bury the unassisted equalizer and force golden goal extra time.
Following their pattern on the day, however, the Bison came out of the gates to tally the game-winner less than three minutes into the first extra frame to hand Gordon the 3-2 loss. Widdison deposited the game winner following a pass from
Rachel Dalrymple.
Keeper
Molly Melanson posted three saves in the winning effort for Nichols, while keepers Smith and Anna Bury combined for eight saves in the loss. With the win Nichols improves to 7-6, 3-3 in conference.
The Scots travel to take on the University of New England on Wednesday, October 19 at 6:00 p.m., while the Bison are on the road at Western New England on the same day for a 7:00 p.m. start.
