WORCESTER, Mass. (Jan. 8) – The Nichols College men's ice hockey team used a balanced attach to snap a three-game losing streak with a 4-1 victory at Assumption Saturday afternoon. Nine players registered at least one point in the win. Senior
Matt Sayer (Lowell, Mass.) scored his team-leading 12the goal of the season in the first period to give Nichols the victory, as the Bison improve to 6-6-1.
On just the second shift of the game, senior
Will Munson (Corona, Calif.) notched his third goal of the season from Sayer and
Wil Brown (Hershey, Pa.) to give Nichols a 1-0 lead. Dave Maiocco knotted the game on the Greyhounds' second power play of the game at 5:33, but Munson connected with Sayer just over two minutes later on the Bison's second power play of the game for what proved to be the game-winner.
The second period fared closer, but Nichols netminder
Jacob Rinn (Warwick, R.I.) came up big with less than five minutes remaining when he stopped a penalty shot after a Bison hooking penalty. Nichols carried the momentum into the final frame and scored a pair of goals 1:57 apart to edge ahead, 4-1. Matt Roberts (Merrimac, Mass.) picked up his first goal of the season just after returning from the penalty box off assist from
Zach Hendrickson (Farmingdale, N.Y.) and
Greg Strootman (Aston, Pa.). At the 4:57 mark,
Zach Kohn (Hartland, Wis.) potted his seventh goal of the season from
Danny Greiner (Columbus, Ohio) and
Kevin Richardson (Temecula, Calif.).
The Bison fought off three penalties in the remainder of the game, holding Assumption 1-for-8 in the game while outshooting them, 32-18 on the afternoon. Rinn finished with 17 saves in the win, while Greyhounds netminder Nick Blanchette made 28 stops.
Nichols is back in action Wednesday night when the Bison host Southern New Hampshire University in an 8:10 p.m. game.
