Late Goals Lift Manhattanville Past Women's Hockey, 3-1

Box Score HARRISVILLE, R.I. (Jan. 5th) – Nichols College women's hockey team fell to Manhattanville 3-1 Wednesday January 5th at Levy Rink. First year goalie Francesca Palazzo (Bernardston, Mass.) posted 44 saves in the loss.

The first period was very back and forth with both teams going shot for shot. At 4:02 into the first period, Manhattanville went on the power play. Seven seconds later, Manhattanville capitalized off of the faceoff when sophomore Lauren Nutkevitch fired a shot from the point that rebounded to sophomore Katie Little who shoveled the puck past the diving goaltender.

Nichols tied it up on their own power play opportunity when sophomore Emily Larosa (Weymouth, Mass.) picked up a rebound in the slot and scored five hole. Picking up the assists were junior Courtney Carey (Belmont, Mass.) and first year Bridget Griffin (Wilmington, Mass.).

The second period was a stalemate as both goalies stood tall in net. Manhattanville outshot Nichols 13-4 in the second period, but could not manage to take the lead. Nichols had four power plays in the second period, but could not manage to take the lead.

The Valiants wasted no time as junior Hannah Muskego netted the game winning goal on an unassisted effort just 3:21 into the third period. At 17:24, sophomore Sonia Occhionero added an insurance goal on a breakaway chance. She took the puck through the slot beating the goalie low glove side for the shorthanded goal.

First year Mary Evans saved 14 shots for her fourth win of the season to improve Manhattanville to 8-3-1 and 7-1-0 in the conference. Nichols drops to 2-10-0 and 1-7-0 in the conference.

Nichols hosts Utica on January 14th at 7:40 PM at the Levy arena while Manhattanville hosts Utica the Friday at 7:00 PM.
