Box Score HENNIKER, N.H. (Jan. 15) – New England College women's basketball forward Rachel Williams set a Pilgrim single-game scoring record finishing the game with 43 points to lead NEC past the visiting Nichols College Bison 71-60 Saturday afternoon.
With the win the Pilgrims earn their second straight conference victory improving to 2-1 in the TCCC and 9-6 overall. The loss drops the Bison to 0-3 in conference play and 6-8 on the season.
NEC would jump out to an early eight point lead up 15-7 just six minutes into the opening half. The Pilgrims would continue to build on their lead using a 9-0 run to go up 32-16 with 6:27 remaining in the first. Nichols would chip away cutting the lead to 11 with just under three minutes left but NEC would finish the first half shooting a blazing 59% from the field heading into halftime with the 42-28 lead.
The Bison offense would come alive in the second half as the Bison would open the half on a 13-2 run cutting the Pilgrim lead to just five points trailing just 41-46. NEC would respond as the Pilgrims would go on an 11-3 run rebuilding their lead to 13 with 3:22 left in regulation. The Bison would get within 11 but that is as close as they could get as the Pilgrims would eventually capture the 71-60 victory.
In addition to Williams' 43 points she led all rebounders with 14 on the afternoon. NEC's Kate Levy was the only other Pilgrim in double-figures finishing with 10 points and Jenna Ledy chipped in nine points for NEC.
Leading the way for Nichols College was
Jessica Nelson (North Providence, R.I.) who finished with a team-high 25 points and eight rebounds. Nichols'
Kristina Lindgren (Sturbridge, Mass.) finished with 11 points and
Ashley Robidoux (Milford, Mass.) chipped in seven points and dished out a game-high five assists.
NEC returns to action on Wednesday, Jan. 19 when they travel to take on conference opponent Regis College. Nichols will hit the court on Wednesday, Jan. 15 when they host conference foe Salve Regina University at 7:30 p.m.
