Field Hockey Shuts Out Salve Regina, 5-0

DUDLEY, Mass. (Sept. 11) – Led by two goals and an assist from junior Chelsea Correia (Seekonk, Mass.), the Nichols College field hockey team defeated Salve Regina, 5-0, in the The Commonwealth Coast Conference opener for both teams. Nichols improves to 3-0 on the season, while Salve Regina is still searching for its first win at 0-4.

Nichols converted on its second penalty corner of the game as sophomore Barbara Roy (Springfield, Mass.) connected off a pass from Emily Widdison (Greenfield, Mass.) in the 18th minute. Despite a 12-3 shot advantage in the frame, the Bison held a 1-0 lead at the break. Salve Regina netminder Natalie Balletta made five of her nine stops in the opening stanza.

In the 40th minute, the Bison converted on their second consecutive corner, this time as senior Eileen Clinton (Londonderry, N.H.) drilled home the stick stop from MaryKate Frodema (Springfield, Mass.) that was played in by Chelsea Correia.

Chelsea Correia added back-to-back scores, first an unassisted tally three minutes later, then off a feed from Lauren Correia (Seekonk, Mass.) in the 54th minute. Krista-Jean Forand (Plymouth, Mass.) capped the scoring in the 69th minute as the Bison peppered Balletta with eight shots in the second half.

Nichols first year Amanda Broughton (Plymouth, Mass.) made two saves in her first career shutout.

The Bison take a break from TCCC action to host Clark Tuesday at 7 p.m. Salve Regina travels to Framingham State Tuesday for a 4 p.m. non-conference game.
