Men's Hockey Upends Franklin Pierce, 10-3

HARRISVILLE, R.I. (Nov. 10) – The Nichols College men's hockey team opened its home schedule with a 10-3 defeat of Franklin Pierce University Wednesday evening. Junior forward Andrew Letellier (Saco, Maine) led the Bison (1-0-1) with a pair of goals and two assists, while first year Robbie Sorrenti (Wyckoff, N.J.) added the game-winning goal and four assists. The Ravens fall to 0-4-0 on the year.

Nichols held a 3-1 lead after the first period on goals by Letellier, JoJo Bojanowski (Washington Township, Mich.) and Brent Davis (Stony Plain, Alberta). Letellier got the Bison on the board at 3:44 with a short slapshot from the left circle that found the upper right corner of the net. He was assisted by Davis and Sorrenti.

Letellier later found Bojanowski with a neutral zone pass on the power play, sending Bojanowski in for a backhander at the right post at 11:24. Davis took a drop pass from Sorrenti in the left circle and skated it across the nefront before depositing it in the net for a 3-0 lead at 13:55.

The Ravens got on the scoreboard late in the frame with a power-play goal when Sean Woodring lifted a low-angle shot from below the right circle after collecting a pass from behind the net by Roscoe Sweeney. Brendan McCarron picked up the second assist for the marker at 17:36

Sorrenti led off the middle frame with what proved to be the game-winner, potting a rebound off a slap shot from above the right circle by Will Munson (Corona, Calif.) on the power play less than a minute into the stanza.

Anthony Chighisola cut the Bison's lead in half just over the five-minute mark amid a scrum at the right post, jamming in the puck from Dino Frederico and Pat Shortt.

With two skaters in the penalty box, defenseman Wil Brown (Hershey, Pa.) finished a dramatic breakaway through the five hole of Ravens replacement goaltender Dale Adams (Gardner, Mass.) after picking off a pass in the defensive zone.

Letellier picked off another d-to-d pass and chipped it ahead into the neutral zone for Davis to break out on a one-on-one seven minutes later. His attempt appeared to be stopped by Adams, but the puck was deemed over the line for a 6-2 Nichols advantage headed into the third period.

The Bison added four more even-strength goals in the third period before Ravens' forward Bill Sullivan caught the Bison with 2.3 seconds left for a short-handed breakaway tally.

Letellier led off the third with another high shot at 5:06, followed by Zach Hendrickson's (Farmingdale, N.Y.) first score of the year at 11:12. Matt Roberts (Merrimac, Mass.) chipped the puck behind the net to Danny Greiner (Columbus, Ohio), who centered it out to Hendrickson who was wide open in the slot for a high shot that lifted Adams's water bottle.

Greg Strootman (Aston, Pa.) beat Adams on his glove side with less than three minutes to play, and Matt Sayer (Lowell, Mass.) made a diving swipe at the post to cap the scoring at 18:23.

Nichols goaltender Jacob Rinn (Warwick, R.I.) made 25 saves in his first win of the season. Ravens starter Ben Siok made 10 first period saves. Adams took the loss with 22 stops through the final 40 minutes.

Nichols finished 3-for-8 on the power play, while holding Franklin Pierce to a 1-for-8 clip.

The Bison are back in action on Saturday in a 4:35 p.m. home game against Stonehill. Franklin Pierce takes on host Fitchburg State Friday at 8 p.m. in the Fitchburg Shootout.
