Castleton Skates Past Women's Hockey, 4-1

CASTLETON, Vt. – The Castleton State women's ice hockey team skated to a 4-1 victory over Nichols College Saturday afternoon. First-year forward Hannah Tardif (Laconia, N.H.) scored her second goal of the season to lead the Bison as they closed out their first varsity season with a 2-22-1 record and a 1-18-1 mark in ECAC East play.

 

Castleton's Maryann Diehm put the Spartans on the board at 14:28 of the opening frame with an unassisted tally before Amy Costa netted one each in the second and third to put the home team up, 3-0.

 

Tardif capitalized on the power play late in the third period to cut the Spartans' lead to 3-1, with assists coming from classmate Cheryl Pitts (Wakefield, Mass.) and senior Allison Peters (Westford, Mass.).

 

Adrianna Riggio added an empty-netter with 28 seconds left in the game for the final 4-1 score.

 

Junior netminder Melissa Mansfield (Medford, N.Y.) made 25 saves for the Bison, including 13 in the middle stanza. Amanda Hoy picked up the win with 23 saves, including 11 in the final frame. Mansfield, who was in net for both Nichols wins on the year, wraps up the year with a 4.22 goals against average.

 

In its first varsity season, Nichols earned picked up wins over St. Michael's and Chatham. The Bison were led offensively by first-year forward Mandy Manopla (Wellington, Fla.), who registered 13 points on five goals and eight assists.
