Box Score

RUTLAND, Vt. (Dec. 4) – The Castleton State College women's ice hockey team skated to a 2-2 tie against Nichols College on Friday night at Spartan Arena in Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference (ECAC) East action.

Castleton's record goes to 2-6-1 overall on the season and 2-4-1 in ECAC East play. Nichols moves to 1-5-1 overall and 1-4-1 in the ECAC East.

Deadlocked at 0-0 after the first period, Nichols cracked the scoreboard first on Mandy Manopla's (West Palm Beach, Fla.) team-leading fourth goal of the season.

After dodging a defender in the left circle, teammate Emily Larosa (Weymouth, Mass.) fed a wide open Manopla in front of the net with an easy one-timer for a 1-0 advantage.

Castleton responded quickly in the third period tying the contest at the 5:32 mark.

Junior Laura Szwed redirected a shot from teammate Nicole Ruman over the glove of Nichols' goaltender Christine Rigosi (Ridgewood, N.Y.) tying the game at 1-1.

At 12:31, the Spartans jumped ahead to a 2-1 lead thanks to Amy Costa. Costa banged home a feed from Maryanne Diehm for her second goal of the season and Castleton's first lead of the game.

The Spartans lead was short-lived as Courtney Carey (Belmont, Mass.) answered for Nichols eventually forcing overtime. Carey sniped a one-time past Castleton goaltender Amanda Hoy at 14:27 in the high slot from teammate Haylie Carter (Forney, Texas), her first of the season.

Both goalies stood tall in net for their respective clubs with Rigosi stopping 32-of-34 shots while Hoy made 25 saves on 27 shots.

Castleton returns to action tomorrow at 3:00 p.m. against Holy Cross. Nichols heads to Saint Anselm on December 11 for a 4:00 p.m. start.
