SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. — First year forward Zach Kohn (Hartland, Wis.) scored 1:03 into overtime to lead the Nichols College men's hockey team to a 3-2 win over Skidmore College in the Skidmore Invitational semifinals, Saturday at the Saratoga Springs City Rink.
The Bison will face Brockport for the tournament championship on Sunday at 4 p.m. The Golden Eagles beat the University of New England 5-0 in the other semifinal. The Thoroughbreds and Nor'Easters face off at 1 p.m.
Skidmore is 2-2, while Nichols improves to 4-1-1. Brockport is 3-5, UNE is 0-3.
Kohn and Will Munson (Corona, Calif.) factored in all three Nichols goals, with Munson scoring the first two before Kohn's game-winner. Each finished with three points on the night, while first year goaltender Ryan Casey (Pelham, N.H.) picked up an assist on the Bison's first goal of the night.
Nichols took an early 1-0 lead on Munson's first goal of the season at 1:13. Skidmore tied it when Brendan Cottam scored from Alex Mykolenko and Hunter Thayer at 11:23.
The Thoroughbreds took a 2-1 lead with a second period goal when Tyler Doremus scored a power-play goal at 4:27 from Alex Essaris and Matt Czerkowicz.
Nichols came out strong in the third when Munson scored his second of the game 59 seconds in to tie it 2-2.
Kohn scored the game-winner after he buried a pass from Munson for his team-high seventh goal of the season.
Casey was outstanding for Nichols with 46 saves, including 21 in the second period. Thoroughbred goalie Colin Bessey finished with 24 saves.
In the second game, Brockport had no problem with the University of New England on the way to the 5-0 win. Five different players scored for the Golden Eagles, with Dan Galiani and Tom Galiani each contibuting a a goal and an assist. Brockport goalie Todd Sheridan had 27 saves for the shutout.
