Box Score DUDLEY, Mass. (Oct. 7) – Led by a pair of goals from Laurin Pendleton, the Roger Williams University women's soccer team defeated Nichols College, 5-1, in a The Commonwealth Coast Conference game at Vendetti Field Wednesday evening. The game was originally scheduled to be played at Roger Williams, but was moved to Dudley in favor of better field conditions.
Roger Williams (8-3-1, 6-1 TCCC) led 3-1 at halftime on Pendleton's pair and another from freshman Maddy Howard.
Nichols (4-8, 1-6 TCCC) struck first, scoring on the game's first shot on goal in the 15th minute. Bison leading scorer Samantha Abro (Northborough, Mass.) chipped the ball back past a lone Hawks defender to Maria DiTommaso (Rindge, N.H.), who fired into the top right corner of the net for the 1-0 lead.
Pendleton sparked the Hawks' scoring spree with her team-leading eighth goal of the season in the 34th minute. She carried the ball up the right side of the field from about 30 yards out, eluding a pair of Bison defenders along the way before crossing the ball low into the left corner of the net.
Rachel Hodgson dodged a defender and crossed the ball over to Howard in the box seven minutes later as Howard's shot found the high left side of the net for a 2-1 lead.
In the 44th minute, Pendleton again thwarted the Bison defense, this time speeding past a trio of players and placing the ball into the low left from the right side.
Carey Baldwin gave Roger Williams a 4-1 lead in the 55th minute. She took aim on a penalty shot, which Nichols goalkeeper Nicole Johnson (Westhampton, Mass.) stopped. The ball rolled out of Johnson's hands and Baldwin buried the rebound.
Hodgson tallied her own goal in the 68th minute to cap the scoring from Claire Halliday.
Johnson made seven saves in 68 minutes between the pipes before giving way to Andrea D'Antuono (W. Greenwich, R.I.), who finished out the game. Hawks' netminder Jen Garside earned the win by turning aside three shots in 76 minutes before bowing to Kristen Darling.
The Hawks held a 23-8 advantage in shots, with a 12-5 lead in shots on net. There were a combined 12 fouls in the game and corner kicks were even at two apiece.
Nichols hosts Anna Maria Friday for a 7:30 p.m. TCCC game at Vendetti Field, while Roger Williams hosts Endicott Saturday in a 1p.m. TCCC game.
