Field Hockey Doubles Up AMCATS, Extends Streak to 11 Wins

Box Score

PAXTON, Mass. (Oct. 7) – The Nichols College field hockey team defeated Anna Maria College in a The Commonwealth Coast Conference matchup at AMCAT Field on a cold windy Wednesday night. The Bison remained undefeated at 11-0 (4-0 TCCC), while the AMCATS dropped to 1-9 (0-5 TCCC) with the loss.

The undefeated Bison wasted little time getting on the board, scoring at 1:32 on a Courtney Flagg (Spofford, N.H.) goal set-up by Jensen Hume's (Hampton, N.H.) assist.

Under three minutes later, the Bison struck again on senior Sara Bailey's (Athol, Mass.) unassisted score.  The Bison added an unassisted goal from freshman Barbara Roy (Springfield, Mass.) and Flagg's second tally of the game, which was assisted by Eileen Clinton (Springfield, Mass), to take a 4-0 lead into half-time.

The Bison held Anna Maria without a shot in the first half, while adding 19 shots of their own.  Nichols also held an 8-3 advantage in corners during the period.  Alyssa Boykin did her best to keep the AMCATS within striking distance, making 10 saves in the first frame.

The second half remained scoreless until Anna Maria broke through at 52:59, as junior Sarah Boyda fed sophomore Katie Schebel who knocked home the AMCATS first goal of the game.

With just under six minutes remaining, the AMCATS kept their hopes alive, cutting the lead in half on Schebel's second goal of the contest.

The AMCATS' comeback fell short despite playing a much inspired second half. Boykin added six more saves in the second half, stopping 16 total shots in the 4-2 loss.

Nichols starting goalkeeper Krista-Jean Forand (Plymouth, Mass.) bowed out to first year Emily Cornacchio (Salem, Mass.), who allowed two goals and made two saves. Senior MaryKate Bednarz (Springfield, Mass.) made her first appearance in net this season, finishing out the last five minutes of the game.

The AMCATS continue TCCC play at Regis on October 10th at 10:00 a.m., while Nichols hosts New England College October 10th at 11:00 a.m. in a crucial TCCC matchup.
