Women's Hockey Edges Chatham, 1-0, For First Varsity Win

SOUTH BURLINGTON, Vt. – The Nichols College women's ice hockey team edged Chatham, 1-0, for its first varsity win in program history Saturday afternoon at the St. Michael's College Holiday Classic, sponsored by the Windjammer Restaurant. Mandy Manopla (Wellington, Fla.) scored the game-winning goal midway through the third period, and was named to the All-Tournament Team.

 

Melissa Mansfield (Medford, N.Y.) earned her first career shutout win with 32 saves, including one on a penalty shot with 1:39 left in regulation.

 

Manopla broke the stalemate with her first career goal at 10:10 of the final stanza, assisted by classmates Krista-Jean Forand (Plymouth, Mass.) and Courtney Carey (Belmont, Mass.).

 

For Chatham (1-10-1), junior Brenn Scott turned aside 19 shots, including a penalty shot with 1:39 left.

 

Earning All-Tournament honors were: Payne and Julian from Colby, Sweezey and junior Alexis Regan  from Saint Michael's, Manpola from Nichols, and freshman Lauren Campbell from Chatham.

 

The Bison (1-10-0) return to ECAC East action on Friday, January 9, with an 8:30 p.m. home game against MIT.
