Box Score HARRISVILLE, R.I. – The Nichols College men's hockey team netted a pair of third-period goals to defeat visiting Lebanon Valley College, 4-2, in non-conference action Saturday evening at June Rockwell Levy Rink. The Bison, winners of eight of their last nine, found themselves behind twice in the game before striking twice in the final frame to break a two-goal deadlock and improve to 15-2 overall. The Flying Dutchmen capitalized with a pair of power play goals in five opportunities, but slip to 0-16 on the on the season.
After a scoreless first period that saw the host Bison outshoot their visitors, 14-4, it was the Flying Dutchmen who struck first, netting a power-play tally within the opening five minutes of the second period. First-year forward Matthew Becker jammed in a rebound inside the left post after a flurry of shots in front of the Bison net. Classmates Nicholas Schultz and Marcus Wilhite picked up assists on the score.
Nichols senior assistant captain Anthony Monte (Chicago, Ill.) picked up the equalizer less than three minutes later with a breakaway goal. The forward skated through a pair of defenders in the neutral zone and skated in unopposed before faking a shot and slipping the puck on his forehand behind Dutchmen goaltender Rich Drazin at 6:09.
Lebanon Valley again took the lead before the midway mark of the middle stanza, when first-year forward Josh Goellner deflected in a power-play goal for a 2-1 advantage. Classmate Corey Conte fed senior defenseman Bert Malloy at the point where the blueliner fired a slapshot. Goellner made a diving deflection in the slot, tipping the puck high past Nichols netminder Jacob Rinn's (Warwick, R.I.) glove at 8:54.
Ryan Gervais (Chicago, Ill.) evened the score five minutes later with his team-leading ninth goal of the season, taking advantage of an extra-man opportunity, the Bison's fifth of the night. Gervais banked a low-angle shot off Drazin with first-year forward Andrew Ella (Schomberg, Ontario) and senior captain Cole Ruwe (Pekin, Ill.) earning assists on the play.
In the third period, Matt Sayer (Lowell, Mass.) banged home his own rebound on the doorstep after Drew Palmer (Chelmsford, Mass.) fed him through the slot from above the right circle. Zeke Costello (Shelby Township, Mich.) picked up the second assist on the game-winner, scored at 6:56.
Will Munson (Corona, Calif.) capped the scoring when he lifted a pass from Gervais past Drazin's glove into the upper right corner at 8:50 of the frame.
Drazin shouldered the loss with 31 saves, while Rinn earned his first collegiate victory with 22 stops.
Nichols returns to action on Friday with a 5:30 p.m. ECAC Northeast game at Johnson & Wales. Lebanon Valley plays a pair of ECAC West games at Hobart next weekend, starting with a 7 p.m. game Friday.
