Box Score HARRISVILLE, R.I. – The Nichols College men's hockey team suffered a 2-0 loss to 13th-ranked Manhattanville Sunday evening at June Rockwell Levy Rink. The loss snaps a seven-game win streak for the Bison, and marks just the second loss on the season as the team slips to 14-2-0 overall. The Valiants, on a nine-game unbeaten streak, improve to 8-2-2.
Manhattanville held an 11-4 shot advantage in the opening frame, but didn't strike until on a two-man advantage at 6:38 of the second. Senior forward Chris Trafford (Kinburn, Ont.) passed across the top of the slot to junior forward Arlen Marshall (Quill Lake, Sask.) in the left circle before Marshall threaded it across to junior forward Dillon Henningson (Edmonton, Alb.) who slipped it in near the left post as Nichols netminder Keith Fink (Easton, Md.) slid to the right.
The Valiants added an empty-net goal with 23 seconds left in the game, courtesy of junior center Joe DiCamillo (Rochester, N.Y.). With Fink pulled in favor of the extra attacker, Evan Michalchuck (Edmonton, Alb.) fed DiCamillo from the right circle before the centerman touched it over the line for a 2-0 lead.
Nichols managed 11 shots in the final frame, peppering Manhattanville netminder Sergiy Sorokolat (Khariv, Ukraine) with three shots on a late power-play, including a point-blank wrister from sophomore Matt Sayer (Lowell, Mass.), but the sophomore was up to the task.
Sorokolat finished with 19 saves for his sixth win and second shutout of the season. Fink made 25 saves, including all 11 in the first period, in his first loss of the season; he stands at 10-1 on the year.
The Valiants connected on one of six power-play opportunities, while holding the Bison scoreless in four opportunities.
Nichols is back in action against Lebanon Valley Saturday in an 8:30 p.m. home game. Manhattanville travels to Fredonia for a pair of games next weekend, taking on the Blue Devils Friday at 7 p.m. and Saturday at 3 p.m.
