Field Hockey Drops 2-1 Game at WPI

Box Score

WORCESTER, Mass. -- Sasha Marokhovsky drilled home a pass from Nicole Maglione with 14:01 remaining in the game to lift WPI to a 2-1 victory over visiting Nichols in non-conference field hockey action on Tuesday afternoon. With the win, the Engineers up their record to 6-3 while Nichols dips to 5-4.

The two teams traded goals during the first six minutes. Courtney Flagg (Spofford, N.H.) got Nichols on the board in the fourth minute when she tipped in a shot off the stick of Sara Bailey (Athol, Mass.) for her second goal of the season.  The Crimson and Gray answered back less than two minutes later when Maglione gathered in a loose ball and knocked it the net for an unassisted tally. The goal was her fifth of year and 25th of her standout career.

WPI had the better of the action to start the second half, collecting seven of the first eight shots of the stanza.  They were rewarded when Maglione found Marokhovsky on nifty through pass and the freshman buried the shot for her fifth marker of the season.

Betsy Ray picked up the win in net for WPI. The junior was credited with six saves on the day, including three in the final 2:11 of the contest. Nichols goalkeeper MaryKate Bednarz (Springfield, Mass.) was stellar in net, stopping 11 shots on the day.  The Bison were aided by a defensive save from Emily Stearns (Mansfield, Mass.).

Nichols returns to action Saturday in a 10 a.m. TCCC game against Salve Regina as part of homecoming.
