Case OT Goal Lifts Field Hockey to 3-2 Win Over Spartans

Box Score

DUDLEY, Mass. – Nichols College senior Brittney Case (Cambridge, Mass.) scored 3:23 into overtime to finish off a 3-2 comeback victory over Castleton State Thursday evening at Vendetti Field. With the win, Nichols improves to 4-3, while Castleton State drops to 7-3 after having its six-game win streak snapped.

Case found herself on a breakaway, one on one with the goalie, after a long clear by the Nichols defense. Castleton's senior goalkeeper, Trisha Clark (East Dover, Vt.) charged out of net to kick it away, but Case was able to get around her and roll the ball into the wide open net.

The first half belonged to Castleton State as they were able to put two goals on the board while holding their opponents to no goals. Senior Trishia Fellows ( Hartford Conn.) put the Spartans on top just under six minutes into the game when she received a pass from senior Kayla Blank (Whitesboro, N.Y.) right in front of the goal. With 2:22 on the clock Fellows scored her second goal to lengthen Castleton's lead to 2-0.

The second half went to Nichols College as the play was dominantly towards Castleton's half of the field. First-year player Lauren Correia ( Seeknok, Mass.) scored seven-and-a-half minutes into the half, assisted by sophomore Eileen Clinton (Londonderry, N.H.).

Case scored with 2:46 left in regulation to send the game into overtime. Sophomore Amber Cottrell (Hoosick Falls, N.Y.) provided the assist on the goal.

Nichols junior goalkeeper, MaryKate Bednarz (Springfield, Mass.) ended the game with seven saves and Clark finished eight saves.

Nichols next game will be at Regis in a conference game, Saturday at 1:00PM. Castleton will next visit Union College Tuesday at 6:00 PM.
