Box Score DUDLEY, Mass. -- Nichols College senior Brittney Case (Cambridge, Mass.) scored with 10 seconds left to lift the Bison to a 2-1 field hockey victory over Clark University at Vendetti Field Saturday afternoon. The game featured a complete change in pace from a defensive struggle in the first half to an onslaught of shots in the second.
With the game knotted at 1-1, the game looked to be going to overtime as the play was stuck at middle field. Just as the game was about to expire, Case slipped the shot past Clark's sophomore goalkeeper Kathryn Dawsey (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.).
The first shot of the game came more than six minutes into the first half, with the two teams combining for only seven in the frame. Nichols held the Cougars to one shot in the stanza, while only managing three on net.
Sophomore MaryKate Frodema (Springfield, Mass) capitalized midway through the first half, putting Nichols on the board with 15:24 left on the clock when she slid the ball along the ground from the right side of the arc into the left corner of the goal.
The second half proved to be a completely different game with the intensity raised by both squads. Three minutes into the half, Nichols first year player Lauren Correia (Seeknok, Mass) found a wide open net only to be stopped with a defensive save by Clark sophomore Gloria Torres (West Hartford, Conn.).
Then with 11:19 remaining in regulation, Clark forward Madeleine Henefield (Pelham, Mass.) scored on a penalty stroke to tie the game, firing her shot high past MaryKate Bednarz (Springfield, Mass.).
Lauren DeMetro (Summit, N.J.) looked to put the Cougars on top as time was waning with a one-on-one with Bednarz, but the Nichols goalkeeper charged out of the net and kicked the ball away to end the threat.
Dawsey finished with nine saves, while Bednarz earned the win with four.
Nichols (3-2), winners of three straight, travels to MIT for a 7 p.m. game Tuesday. Clark (2-3) hosts Regis Thursday at 7 p.m.
