WESTFIELD, Mass. – The Westfield State field hockey team defeated Nichols College, 3-0, Thursday afternoon. Junior goalkeeper MaryKate Bednarz (Springfield, Mass.) made seven stops for the Bison (0-2).

Jessi Gould notched the game-winner early in the second half after Nichols held the Owls to just two shots in the first frame. The Bison put three shots on Westfield State netminder Amanda McCarthy in the opening stanza, but could not get one past her.

The Owls opened up the game in the second half, peppering Bednarz with nine shots and tallying all three scores in the period. After Gould's goal at 49:15, Ashley Wojnarowski added her first of the season just over two minutes later, with the assist coming from Alicia Gardner. Amanda Burns followed at 64:41 with her second goal of the season from Kara Guittarr to give the Owls a 3-0 lead.

Nichols is back in action on Saturday at home against the University of New England in a 1 p.m. game at Vendetti Field.
