NEWPORT, R.I. - Salve Regina University men's tennis ran its conference regular season win streak to 62 straight with an 8-1 victory over visiting Nichols College in Newport.
The Bison, the last league team to defeat the Seahawks (8-1 in 2000), earned their only point with an 8-4 decision at first doubles for the freshman pair of Jack Baker [Cheshire, Conn.] and Tyler McLaughlin [Hollis, N.H.]. But Salve Regina (10-3; 5-0 TCCC) took every other match including six singles each in straight sets.
Salve Regina, unbeaten in 2008, won its 10th straight dual match as Robbie Norton [Exeter, N.H.] and Chris Tolo [Shelton, Conn.] took an 8-1 win at second doubles and Dillon Mangs [Branford, Conn.] and Trey Van Buskirk [La Jolla, Calif.] won 8-4 at third doubles.
Jason Lago [Seabrook, N.H.] and Andrew Martin [Glastonbury, Conn.] both won by 6-0, 6-0 scores at second and fourth singles, respectively. Norton clinched the team decision with a 6-1, 6-1 victory at first singles. Van Buskirk and Tolo finished within 15 seconds of each other with straight-set triumphs.
Adam Troutman [Wethersfield, Conn.] finished the singles sweep with a 6-2, 6-2 win at sixth for the Seahawks. Salve Regina hosts Eastern Nazarene on Wednesday (3:30 p.m.); Nichols (3-7; 2-1 TCCC) hosts Western New England tomorrow in Dudley, Mass.
