Bison End Season with Pair of Losses to Wentworth

DUDLEY, Mass.-
In its final doubleheader of the season the Nichols College baseball team fell to Wentworth by scores of 9-5 and 7-1 in The Commonwealth Coast Conference action on Saturday. The Leopards end the regular season 27-11 overall and 15-7 in the conference while the Bison close out their season 8-26 overall and 6-16 in TCCC play.

In game one, Nichols took a one-run lead in the first when freshman Christopher Nemeskal (Swampscott, Mass.) singled home senior Parker Riley (Allentown, Pa.), who reached on a double.

Wentworth tied the game in the top of the fourth off an error and wild pitch but Nichols scored three runs in the bottom half of the inning to take a 4-1 lead. Freshman Mathew Whitman (North Plainfield, N.J.) recorded an RBI single while freshman Zach Johnson (Wakefield, R.I.) delivered a two-run triple.

The Leopards tied the game with a three run fifth as Nichols defense unraveled, posting three errors. Junior Mike Roberts (Chelmsford, Mass.) singled home senior Jarrett Ament (Boylston, Mass.), who reached on a single of his own. Junior Mike Cunningham (Pemboke, Mass.) followed up with an RBI single that scored sophomore Pete Oggeri (Sandy Hook, Conn.), who went from first to third on a Bison error. Wentworth got the tying run across the plate on another Nichols error.

The Bison took a one-run lead in the bottom of the fifth after senior Jamie Kimberly (Woodbury, Conn.) scored Riley with a sacrifice fly to left field.

Wentworth took the lead for good with a two-run sixth. Oggeri drove in the go-ahead run after the Leopards scored the tying run off another Nichols error. The Leopards added three more runs in the seventh off three hits and two errors for the 9-5 final.

Oggeri and junior Phil Costello (Medford, Mass.) led the Leopards with two RBI each off two hits. Roberts also posted two hits for Wentworth. Junior Matt Chymbor (Meridan, Conn.) improved to 6-2 on the year with the win on the mound. He gave up just one run off two hits in the final three innings. Senior Andrew Besegai (Plymouth, Mass.) suffered the loss as he gave up six runs, three earned, off six hits.

In game two, Wentworth jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the second and never looked back as it added one run in the fourth and three more in the sixth.

 

In the second, the Leopards got two on with no outs but Kimberly was able to get two outs with no damage. Freshman Jake McManus (Hopkinton, N.H.) allowed two runs to score with his two out single while sophomore Anthony Carbone (Goshen, Conn.) stole home for the third run of the inning.

Costello drove in this third run of the day when he singled home Roberts in the third inning. Nichols scored its lone run of the game in the bottom of the third when sophomore Alexander Montalto (Williamstown, Mass.) scored freshman Patrick Coakley (Charlton, Mass.) on a fielder's choice.

Ament drove in two runs for Wentworth in the sixth while junior Nick Cunningham (Pembroke, Mass.) scored another run with a double.

Wentworth used five pitchers on the day all of which had solid outings. Sophomore Chris Carbone (Goshen, Conn.) earned the start, pitching two innings of scoreless action. Sophomore Mo Garden (Chagrin Falls, Ohio) was credited with the win, his third of the year, as he pitched 2.2 perfect innings.

Ament and McManus led the Leopard in game two with a pair of RBI each. Nichols managed just three hits in the second game while Kimberly suffered the loss on the mound.
