Bison Split with NEC; Earn #2 Seed in TCCC Tournament

The Nichols College softball team split a doubleheader with New England College on Saturday to close out its regular season. The Bison fell in game one 4-3 before bouncing back with a 6-3 victory in game two. Nichols will be the second seed in the upcoming TCCC Tournament as UNE split its doubleheader with Roger Williams. The Bison would win the tie-breaker with Western New England College if the Golden Bears sweep Eastern Nazarene later today.

In game one the two teams would battle through a scoreless opening three innings before Nichols College would string together four singled and score two runs in the top of the fourth to take the 2-0 lead.  NEC would get those runs back in the fourth as the Pilgrims would plate four runs on five hits taking their first lead of the afternoon. Neither team would score in the sixth inning but the Bison would threaten in the seventh scoring a run cutting the Pilgrim lead to a run but NEC would get the final two outs edging the Bison 4-3.

Leading the way for NEC was Sierra Thibeault (Brunswick, Maine) who singled in two runs for the Pilgrims.  NEC's Alexandria Sacco (Tewksbury, Mass.) doubled in a run and Kristen Purdy (Candia, N.H.) finished with a double and a run scored for the Pilgrims.  Picking up the win on the mound for NEC was Bethany Forshaw (Waterford, Conn.) who pitched the complete game allowing three earned runs.

Leading the way for Nichols College was Shaleese Young (Salt Lake City, Utah) and Lauren Lombardo (Wolcott, Conn.) who each finished with two hits and a run scored.  Nichols College's Valeri Calcagni (Rocky Hill, Conn.) singled in two runs for the Bison.

In game two the Pilgrims would get on the board first scoring a run in the bottom of the first but the Bison would respond with single tallies in second and the third to lead 2-1 heading into the fourth inning.  Neither team would be able to muster a run in the fourth or fifth inning but the Bison would score a run in the sixth and add three in the seventh to head into the home half of the seventh up 6-1.  The Pilgrims would get two runs back in the bottom of the seventh but the Nichols defense would get the final three outs going on to capture the 6-3 win. 

Leading the way for Nichols College was Loren Rozanski (Plainville, Conn.) and Valeri Calcagni who each finished with two hits.  Nichols College's Christina Herbert (Johnson, R.I.) finished with a double, a run scored and a run batted in for the Bison.  Picking up the win on the mound for the Bison was Lauren Person (Vernon, Conn.) who pitched the complete game allowing just three runs on eight hits.

Leading the way for NEC was Sierra Thibeault and Alexandria Sacco who each finished with two hits and a run scored.  NEC's Jessica Chisholm (Stoughton, Mass.) and Amanda Lester (Columbia, Conn.) each singled in a run for the Pilgrims.
