Strong Second Half Effort Pushes Salve Past Bison, 8-3

NEWPORT, R.I.
– Salve Regina University scored the final four goals of the game to pull away from Nichols College, 8-3, in The Commonwealth Coast Conference men's lacrosse action Monday.

Holding a slim 4-3 lead, Salve Regina (5-7, 3-4 TCCC) got a goal from Ryan Doherty [JR/Newton, Mass.] with 4:39 left in the third quarter. The Seahawks used that goal to gain momentum and outscored Nichols (0-13, 0-7 TCCC) 3-0 in the fourth quarter.

Freshman Evan Gates [Ridge, N.J.] – who finished with one goal and three assists – scored at 8:41 of the fourth to put the Seahawks up 6-3. Salve Regina then scored twice in 46 seconds to put the game away. Senior Brandt Nelson [Shelburne, Vt.] scored at 5:34, and classmate Robert Hoffman [Spring Lake Heights, N.J.] added a tally with 4:48 remaining.

Junior Ryan Comerford [Merrimack, N.H.] finished with two goals and one assist, while senior Josh Sallese [Beverly, Mass.] had a pair of goals. Junior Nick Clark [Rye, N.H.] and sophomore Nate Burns [Sandwich, Mass.] led a defense that allowed just 12 shots on goal, and just one goal in the second half.

Freshman Brian Gattie [Plainfield, Mass.] led Nichols with two goals. Sophomore Sean Tarrant [Norwalk, Conn.] had one goal, while Ryan Pacific [FR/Danbury, Conn.] had one assist. Junior Ryan Jacobson [Worcester, Mass.] had a game-high 10 ground balls for the Bison.

Salve Regina hosts Endicott College on Thursday, April 24 (4 p.m.), while Nichols hosts Roger Williams University on Wednesday, April 23 (7 p.m.).
