BOSTON, Mass. – The Nichols College softball team scored 33 runs and pounded out 27 hits en route to a The Commonwealth Coast Conference doubleheader sweep of Wentworth. The Bison took the first game, 17-3, and completed the sweep with a 16-7 triumph in the nightcap.
The Bison opened the first game by scoring nine runs over the first three innings, beginning with a four-run first. Senior Lauren Person (Vernon, Conn.) would have an RBI single, while junior Christina Hebert (Johnston, R.I.) delivered a two-run double. Nichols tacked on three more in the second, aided in part by two Wentworth errors, with senior Tracy Cullity (Manchester, N.H.) providing an RBI double. In the third inning, Nichols took advantage of two more Leopard miscues, scoring two more runs by way of just one hit, a single by Hebert.
Wentworth got on the board in the home half of the fourth when junior Emily Caruso (Everett, Mass.) doubled home senior Ashley Glassick (Newport, R.I.), who had led off he inning with a single. The Leopards scored two more times in the fifth inning when sophomore Carla Vasta (Reading, Mass.) was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to drive in a run and freshman Danielle Fontaine (Bath, Maine) drew a bases-loaded walk.
Nichols broke the game open in the top of the sixth inning by scoring eight times on five hits and were once again helped out by defensive mistakes by the Leopards. Senior Joanne Brignoli (Feeding Hills, Mass.) had two hits in the inning.
Person picked up the win to improve to 7-3 on the year. She pitched five innings, allowing three runs on five hits and struck out eight. Freshman Kara Buckley (Nashua, N.H.) pitched the sixth inning, allowing one hit and striking out one. At the plate, Hebert was 3-for-4 with three RBI, while Brignoli, Cullity, and freshman Shannon Weeks (Greenfield, Mass.) each had two hits.
Leopard freshman Amanda Schiffer (Seymour, Conn.), who allowed 17 runs (six earned) on 12 hits to pick up the loss (0-12), had two hits for Wentworth.
The Bison picked up where they left off in game one by scoring five runs in the top of the first inning, thanks in part to a two run double from sophomore Lauren Lombardo (Wolcott, Conn.). Wentworth scored one in the bottom of the first when junior Christina Morris (Eatontown, N.J.) scored on a wild pitch.
Nichols scored a single run in the second and third innings, as Brignoli had an RBI groundout in the second and senior Stephanie Magni (Newton, Mass.) plated a run with a groundout in the third. Wentworth tallied twice in the home half of the third with Glassick driving in a run with a single and freshman Bridget Souza (Medford, Mass.) reaching on a fielder's choice that would also score a run.
Leading 7-3 after three innings of play, Nichols tacked on three runs in the fourth inning, with all of the runs coming on a bases-loaded triple from sophomore Valerie Calcagni (Rocky Hill, Conn.). A two-run triple from freshman Lindsay Hassett (Oxford, Mass.) and a an RBI double from Brignoli pushed the lead to 13-3 after four and a half innings. However, Wentworth began to mount a comeback in the home half of the inning, scoring four times, keyed by a two-run single from sophomore Laura Cyr (Arlington, Mass.), and trailed 13-7. The Bison, though would score three times in the top of the seventh to account for the final margin of 16-7.
Sophomore Ashley Wyland (Schenectady, N.Y.) improved to 5-2 on the year with the win. She allowed seven runs (six earned) on 12 hits and struck out five batters in 4.1 innings. Buckley pitched the final 2.1 frames, allowing two hits and striking out two. At the plate, Calcagni was 2-for-5 with three RBI, while Hassett and Brignoli each had two hits and drove in two runs.
Freshman Lizz Harvey (McConnellsberg, Pa.) picked up the loss (0-9) for Wentworth, allowing 16 runs (eight earned) on 15 hits, and striking out three. Morris, Harvey, and Glassick each had three hits for the Leopards.
Both teams are back in action tomorrow for TCCC doubleheaders. Wentworth (0-24, 0-20 TCCC) is at Endicott, while Nichols (20-11, 15-3) hosts Roger Williams.
