Box Score NEW LONDON, Conn.--The Connecticut College Camels (6-5) rolled to a 16-2 victory against Nichols College (0-10) in men's lacrosse action played at Silfen Field Saturday. Sophomore Steve Dachille (Garden City, N.Y.) erupted with four goals and an assist and Rob Walsh (Charlestown, R.I.) turned in a four-point performance with three goals and one helper for the Camels. Ryan Hayes (Darien, Conn.) and Will Fries (Princeton, N.J) each finished with a goal and two assists for the Camels, who out-shot the Bison 61-to-14 en route to victory.
Rookie attack Ryan Pacific (Danbury, Conn.) finished with a goal and an assist for the Bison. Justin Berrett (Plymouth, Minn.) had 18 saves for Nichols in a courageous effort between the pipes.
Peter Smyth (Bradford, Mass.) opened the scoring with 10:42 remaining in the first quarter, tallying on a feed from Pacific and Nichols had a 1-0 advantage. But the Camels would score the next four goals in the quarter as a part of an 8-0 run to put this game away early. Dachille tied the game with 7:08 remaining. With 5:19 to play, Matt Flanagan (Somerset, N.J.) put the Camels on top to stay, scoring on a feed from Dachille.
With 2:04 to go, Phips Smith (Far Hills, N.J.) netted his fourth goal of the season and it was a 3-1 game. The Camels would add their fourth goal on the ensuing faceoff. Peter Musser (Lafayette, Calif.) earned one of his 15 victories on the draw and recorded one of his team-high 10 ground balls. Musser hit Hayes as he was coming back to the ball, and the freshman deposited a nifty turnaround shot into the back of the net for a score that made it a 4-1 game after one.
In the second quarter, the Camels extended the lead to four on Jesse Stevenson's (Marshfield, Mass.) 12th goal of the season with 10:44 to go. Mark Mangano (Basking Ridge, N.J.) assisted on the score. On the ensuing faceoff, Musser earned another victory with Walsh collecting a hard-fought ground ball. Walsh connected with Pat Gaughn (Winter Park, Fla.) who assisted Dachille for his second score of the afternoon to make it a 6-1 contest. With1:55 remaining, Hayes assisted Dachille for his third goal of the afternoon and it was a 7-1 game at the half.
The Camel continued to cause problems for Nichols in clearing situations. Senior defenseman Brian Ford (Hinesburg, Vt.) cashed in on a rare scoring opportunity, breaking up a clear at midfield and scoring in an all out sprint to the cage to make it an 8-1 score with 9:02 remaining in the third. The Bison converted on an extra man opportunity with 7:17 left in the quarter. Lucas Wilson (Falmouth, Mass) assisted Pacific for the man-up goal to make it an 8-2 game. Connecticut College answered with goals from Dachille and Ben Eischen (Brookfield, N.H.) to build a 10-2 lead after three quarters of play.
Walsh added three more goals in the fourth quarter and the hosts cruised to the 16-2 victory. Sophomore goalkeeper Mark Moran (Greenwich, Conn.) picked up the victory with four saves in one half of play. Bro Smith (Wellesley, Mass.) and Robert Morgan (Shady Side, Md.) shared the net-minding duties in the second half of action.
Adam Mays (Edgewater, Md.) contributed a team-high six ground balls for the Bison.
