WENHAM, Mass., March 26, 2008 – Nichols College traveled to Wenham where they swept a pair of The Commonwealth Coast Conference (TCCC) games against Gordon, 7-4 and 2-1.
In game 1, the Bison (5-6, 2-0) took advantage of three Fighting Scots (1-9, 0-2) errors in the top of the third to get three runs across the plate as right fielder Stephanie Magni (Newton, Mass.) reached on an error and scored before leftfielder Shaleese Young (Salt Lake, Utah) singled and scored and Loren Rozanski (Plainville, Conn.) also reached on an error and scored. The Bison would tack on two more in the fourth and another in the fifth as Valeri Calcagni (Rocky Hill, Conn.) crossed the plate with another unearned run.
The Fighting Scots got the bats going in the bottom of the sixth, trailing 6-0, when freshman Courtney Stevenson (Bangor, Maine) walked, stole second and eventually scored on an RBI sac-fly from senior shortstop Cindy Hill (Laguna Niguel, Calif.). GC catcher Tara Heneghan (Point Lookout, N.Y.) then plated centerfielder Kim Levinsky (West Caldwell, N.J.) with a ground out to short and the Scots trailed by four, 6-2, after six. Nichols added an insurance run in the top of the seventh and the Fighting Scots added two more but left the bases loaded in the bottom of the last and fell 7-4.
Nichols starter Lindsay Hassett (Oxford, Mass.) went the distance for her second win of the year while GC starter Sarah Grimes (Terryville, Conn.) was hit with the loss.
Game 2 would prove to be a pitchers duel as neither Granat nor Nichols senior Lauren Person (Vernon, Conn.) would surrender a run through the first four innings. The Bison broke the silence in the top of the fourth as Young doubled and Rozanski hit an RBI single to left. Nichols added another run in the top of the sixth when Amber Cottrell (Hoosick Falls, N.Y.) singled to right to plate pinch runner Amanda Harvey (Falmouth, Mass.). Granat hit a solo shot to centerfield to lead off the sixth and make it a 2-1 game but the Scots again left the bases loaded to end the game in the bottom of the seventh.
