WENHAM, Mass.- Nichols College had 11 different players in the scoring column as the Bison allowed just 12 Gordon College points in the first half en route to a 67-35 win over the Fighting Scots in The Commonwealth Coast Conference (TCCC) play this afternoon in the Bennett Center on the campus of Gordon College.
The Fighting Scots (4-17, 3-6) trailed the Bison (15-6, 7-2) 10-2 in the early going as Nichols sophomore guard Curtia Humbert (Bridgeport, Conn.) hit a jumper followed by a lay-up to give the visitors an eight point lead with 13:51 to play in the half. GC junior forward Erin Thames (River Vale, N.J.) retaliated with a jumper in the lane to make it a 10-4 contest just 30 seconds later. Following Thames' shot, however, the Scots would not score for nearly 10 minutes as the Bison took advantage with a 9-0 run in that span as freshman guard Jessica Nelson (N. Providence, R.I.) capped the run with a three pointer with just under nine minutes remaining.
Fighting Scots sophomore guard Kim Levinsky (West Caldwell, N.J.) stopped the bleeding with a mid-range jumper and classmate forward Alexis Klempel (Bismarck, N.D.) followed with a lay-in to make it a 19-8 contest with 3:21 showing in the first half. The Scots would hit four free-throws in the final minutes of the half but the visitors built a 31-12 lead at the break as three Bison hit a three in the last 3:03 of the half. Nichols held the Scots to just 15.4 percent shooting in the half while they would hit 4-of-8 from downtown in the opening frame.
Early in the second half, the Fighting Scots would cut the lead to 20 on a three from sophomore guard Brianne Records (Bar Harbor, Maine) but the Bison continued to pile on the points taking a 38 point lead, 59-21, midway through the half. GC shot significantly better in the second half (34.6 percent) but the Bison rolled to a 67-35 victory.
Nichols was led by Humbert's 12 points in just 15 minutes of play while freshman guard Ashley Ribidoux (Milford, Mass.) tallied nine points-all on three-pointers.
Gordon was led by Klempel's eight points while sophomore forward Rebecca Carroll (Pleasant Valley, N.Y.) grabbed eight rebounds.
The Fighting Scots will travel to New London, N.H. on Tuesday (Feb. 12) evening for a TCCC match-up with Colby-Sawyer College at 5:30 p.m.; the Bison travel to Boston to battle Wentworth the same night.
