DUDLEY, Mass.- The Nichols women's basketball team closed out its 2007-08 regular season with a 70-56 win over the University of New England in The Commonwealth Coast Conference action on Saturday. The Bison, the #3 seed, will host #6 seed Regis in their TCCC Quarterfinals match this Tuesday at 7 p.m. UNE will be the #7 seed and will play at #2 seed WNEC on Tuesday.
Nichols limited the Nor'easters to just 18 first half points, holding them to 16.7 percent shooting. Sophomore Curtia Humbert (Bridgeport, Conn.) recorded her second double-double of the season with a team-high 13 points and ten rebounds.
The Bison stormed out to an 8-0 lead thanks to their two seniors, Katie Fondelheit (Dayville, Conn.) and Kristina Weasel (Wakefield, R.I.), who scored the first two baskets of the game. UNE fought its way back, taking its first and only lead of the game, 11-10, with 10:17 left. The Bison out-scored the Nor'easters 24-7 the rest of the half, however, to head into the locker room with a commanding 16 point lead.
Sophomore Lyndsey Bennett (North Brookfield, Mass.) scored a team-high eight points off the bench, including a pair of threes. Freshman Michele Guerin (Chicopee, Mass.) had a strong half as well, posting five points and five rebounds. Weasel scored all five of her points in the first half.
Nichols was up by as many as 19 points early in the second half but UNE managed to break the momentum and cut the lead to 12 with a tough effort. The Bison defense didn't allow UNE to get any closer though as they were able to hold onto their double-digit lead the rest of the way.
Bennett and junior MaryLynn Skarzenski (Woodbridge, N.J.) each added 11 points in the victory for Nichols. Weasel finished with a season-high six rebounds in the win while Fondelheit played extremely well, providing the Bison with strong defense in the paint. She posted two rebounds as well as a block and an assist in the win. Prior to the game, Nichols honored Fondelheit and Weasel for their four-years of hard work and dedication.
UNE had a well-balanced scoring effort as ten players scored, including team-highs of nine from sophomore Katie Diggins (Merrimack, N.H.) and freshman Chelsey Meszaros (North Clarendon, Vt). Diggins also added a game-high 11 rebounds in the loss.
