Box Score MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – Despite outshooting the Cardinals, 34-16, the Nichols College women's hockey team remained winless on the season after a 2-0 loss to Wesleyan Saturday evening. Christina Rigosi (Ridgewood, N.Y.) made 14 saves in her first appearance of the season.
Wesleyan senior goaltender Rachel Stemerman posted her fourth career shutout by making 34 saves.
Wesleyan got a goal and an assist each from sophomore Sena Ito and freshman Julia Mulhern. The goals came just 50 seconds apart early in the second period as Mulhern picked up her first career goal by putting home a rebound of a shot from the slot. Mulhern's attempt slid along the ice and tipped off the left goal post into the net. Ito scored her second goal this season off a scramble in front of Rigosi. Ito lifted a shot into the upper right corner of the net to give the Cardinals a 2-0 cushion two minutes into the middle stanza. Stemerman did the rest in preserving the first victory of the year for Wesleyan.
The Bison are idle until the New Year when they travel to the St. Michael's Holiday Tournament in Burlington, Vt. Nichols will take on Colby in the first round at 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 2, and will face Chatham at 4 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 3.
