Women's Hoops Cruises Past Johnson & Wales, 71-48

DUDLEY, Mass. – The Nichols College women's basketball team cruised to its fifth-straight victory, defeating Johnson & Wales, 71-48, to close out the first half of the season Saturday afternoon at home. Sophomore guard Ashley Robidoux (Milford, Mass.) led the Bison with a game-high 16 points and added seven rebounds. Nichols improves to 6-2 overall while Johnson & Wales falls to 3-6 on the season.

Senior guard MaryLynn Skarzenski (Woodbridge, N.J.) added 10 points for the Bison while dishing out eight assists and posting six steals and four rebounds.

Senior guard Alyse Ragaglia paced the Wildcats with a double-double, scoring 11 points and pulling down 12 rebounds, while senior forward Maria Valetta scored a team-high 13 points and added five rebounds.

The scoring was slow to open in the game, as the Wildcats' Ragaglia netted the first points nearly three minutes into the game with a three-pointer. Johnson & Wales led by as many as five after an 8-0 run midway through the first, but Nichols took control with a pair of three-pointers from Skarzenski to kick off a 14-2 run that closed out the half with the Bison up by 10 points, 31-21.

The Bison led by as many as 29 in the second half after a 17-3 run capped by an Alena Jasinski (Canton, Conn.) trey with 8:22 left in the frame. Jasinski was 2-for-3 from behind the arc in the game and also pulled down a career-high seven rebounds.

Nichols fired 52.9% from three-point range in the game, hitting nine of 17 attempts, while holding Johnson & Wales to 19% (4-21). The Bison also claimed a 47-38 advantage off the glass.

Nichols is idle until early January when the Bison travel to the Florida Keys Tournament in Key Largo, Fla., where they will take on Ramapo at 7 p.m. in the opening round on January 3, 2009. Nichols will then face either St. Joseph's (Maine) or Cedar Crest on January 4th. Johnson & Wales hosts Coast Guard at 7 p.m. Tuesday.
