Third Period Power Plays Lift Men's Hockey Past Franklin Pierce, 4-2

Box Score

HARRISVILLE, R.I. – The Nichols College men's hockey team used two third-period power-play goals to defeat Franklin Pierce, 4-2, Wednesday evening at Levy Rink in non-conference action. The Bison saw a two-goal lead erased in the second period before rallying for the pair in the final frame. Will Munson (Corona, Calif.) netted the game-winner, and also had an assist in the game.

Franklin Pierce (0-1-1) threatened on a first-period five-on-three power play, but Nichols netminder Keith Fink (Easton, Md.) made two saves during the span and the Bison defense blocked a pair of shots to keep the Ravens off the board.

Just after Nichols returned to full strength, Zeke Costello (Shelby Township, Mich.) flipped a rebound from first-year forward Andrew Ella (Schomberg, Ont.) to give the Bison a 1-0 lead at 7:43 of the opening frame.

Nichols (3-0-0) added a short-handed tally within the opening minutes of the second period, as sophomore forward JoJo Bojanowski (Washington Township, Mich.) converted a pass from Brett Englebright (Pekin, Ill.) at 14:25. The pair broke out on a two-on-one before Englebright fed Bojanowski in the left circle where the forward snapped the puck across into the upper right corner for a 2-0 lead.

The Ravens battled back, first picking up a power-play goal with a two-man advantage when Casey Goodell tipped in a shot from the point by Jeff Kasper at 6:54.

Midway through the period, Anthony Chighisola pounced on a Nichols turnover in the Bison's zone, and picked it up in the slot before placing high past Fink's glove to knot the game at 10:41.

Munson popped in a rebound at the netfront off a shot from the point by Cole Ruwe (Pekin, Ill.) just before midway of the third period to notch the game-winner on the power play. Anthony Monte (Chicago, Ill.) touched back the faceoff to Ruwe, who fired from the blueline, but Ravens' netminder Jon Tuttle made the save. Munson was waiting at the doorstep to flip the puck in for what turned into the game-winner at 8:19 of the final frame.

Matt Sayer (Lowell, Mass.) poked in a loose rebound on the power play just over three minutes later to give Nichols some insurance; Ella and Munson were credited with assists.

Fink made 10 saves in his third win of the season, while Tuttle shouldered the loss with 39 saves. Nichols finished 2-for-8 with the man advantage, while Franklin Pierce was 1-for-8 on the power play.

Nichols opens ECAC Northeast play with an 8:30 p.m. home game against Westfield State Sunday. Franklin Pierce hosts Assumption Friday at 7 p.m.
