Box Score The Gordon College Fighting Scots field hockey team defeated the Nichols College Bison 3-1 Saturday morning at Vendetti Field. Senior forward Mollie Sweeney (South Hamilton, Mass.) scored the game-winning goal with just under five minutes into second half when she put the shot into the lower right corner of the goal after it had deflected off a Nichols defender in the center of the arc.
In the first half Nichols had a chance to capitalize for the first goal when junior Sara Bailey (Athol, Mass.) was on a breakaway, but her shot was saved by Gordon senior goalkeeper Chyanne Wilson (Pearl River, N.Y.). With just 1:16 left in the first half sophomore Veronica Pierce (West Hartford, Conn.) put a shot through the Nichols' goalkeeper's legs to put the Fighting Scots up by one. The goal was assisted by senior Emma Gates (Franklin, Vt.).
The third goal for Gordon came with 23:38 left in the second half. Senior Sara Orlando (Lafayette Hill, Penn.) got the ball right in front of the net and put it past Nichols for the goal. Gordon looked to push the lead to four goals when Gates was awarded a penalty shot, but her high shot was saved by the diving Nichols junior goalkeeper MaryKate Bednarz (Springfield, Mass.). Nichols was able to end the shut out with 17:17 left in the game as first year forward Chelsea Correia (Seeknok, Mass.) received her own rebound and put the ball in the net to make the score 3-1.
Wilson picked up the victory with five saves to improve Gordon to 11-8 and 5-3 in TCCC play. Bednarz shouldered the loss as she saved 13 shots and Nichols dropped to 8-9 and 4-3 in TCCC play.
Nichols will end their regular season at Western New England College on Tuesday at 4 PM. Gordon will host Connecticut College on Tuesday.
