SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – The Union College women's basketball team held Nichols College to 17 second half points en route to a 61-37 victory over the Bison Wednesday night at the Viniar Athletic Center. Union improves to 6-4 overall while the Bison fall to 8-4.
Senior center Rachel Ormsby (Charlton, N.Y.) scored a game high 15 points with seven rebounds and junior forward Michelle Rogers (Clarence, N.Y.) scored 12 with a game best eight boards to lead the Dutchwomen. Sophomore guard Lucia Reed (Braintree, Mass.) dished out four assists with seven points in the contest. Union out-rebounded Nichols, 52-28. The Dutchwomen shot 37% but forced 23 turnovers. Nichols shot 27% for the night, and was held to 23% from the floor in the second half.
Nichols was led by sophomore Curtia Humbert (Bridgeport, Conn.) with 11 points while senior Kristina Weasel (Wakefield, R.I.) chipped in with five points. Sophomore Margaret Lilly (Ashfield, Mass.) led the Bison with five rebounds.
Union led 31-20 at halftime, and Nichols got as close as nine, 31-22 with 18:31 left in the second half. But in the next 6:56, the Dutchwomen went on a 16-2 run to take a 47-24 advantage. Rachel Scott (Colonie, N.Y.) had five points during the Union run. The largest lead was 26 at 61-35 with 35 seconds remaining.
The Dutchwomen open up Liberty League play Saturday, January 12 against Skidmore at home at 2 p.m. Nichols begins The Commonwealth Coast Conference play at Roger Williams Saturday at 1 p.m.
