Saratoga Springs, N.Y. – The Nichols College women's basketball team used a 40-28 advantage in the second half to slip by Skidmore College, 65-60, Tuesday evening at the Sports and Recreation Center. A tenacious Nichols (8-3) defense forced 26 Thoroughbred turnovers leading to 18 points.
For Skidmore (6-4), Dana Leonard (Cooperstown, N.Y.) finished with 15 points and seven rebounds, while teammate Laura Michel (Middle Village, N.Y) tallied 12 points and three rebounds. Sophomore Amber Kinsey was also in double figures with 10 points, and added seven rebounds and six steals.
Sophomore Curtia Humbert (Bridgeport, Conn.) led the Bison with a game-high 20 points and pulled down eight boards and sophomore Margaret Lilly (Ashfield, Mass.) chipped in 17 points.
Skidmore led for most of the first half and went into halftime with a 32-25 lead after Kinsey hit a jumper with 19 seconds left.
In the second, Humbert hit two successive jumpers that put Nichols a head 49-47 at 5:42. After the Bison led by as much as 10, Laurel Brown (South Hamilton, Mass.) cut the lead to two by hitting consecutive three pointers in the last 1:26 of regulation, but that was as close as Skidmore would get as the Bison took the final, 65-60.
The Nichols bench outscored Skidmore 25-8. The Thoroughbreds were 24-64 from the field, shooting 37.5 percent for the night. The Bison, after clutch free throw shooting near the end, shot 76.2 percent from the line, going 16-22.
The Bison will play at Union tomorrow at 7 p.m.
