POMFRET, Conn.- Nichols scored three goals in the first period and added two more in the third to earn a 5-2 victory over Fitchburg State in ECAC Northeast hockey action on Sunday night. With the win, the Bison improve to 9-2-1 overall and 3-1 in the conference while the Falcons drop to 6-6-2 overall and 2-2-1 in the ECAC Northeast. Junior Ryan Gervais (Chicago, IL) scored two goals while freshman Will Munson (Corona, CA) assisted on three goals to lead the Bison.
Gervais opened up the scoring just 1:27 into the first period with junior Anthony Monte (Chicago, IL) and newcomer JoJo Bojanowski (Washington Township, MI) earning the assists. The Falcons tied things up midway through the period as freshman Andrew Jones (Franklin, MA) scored his sixth goal of the season. Senior Ryan Tierney (Newburyport, MA) and freshman Chris Riggs (Sewell, NJ) assisted on the goal.
The Bison went on to score a pair of goals in the final 1:58 of the first period to head into the first intermission with a 3-1 lead. Gervais scored his second goal of the game at the 18:02 mark while Munson picked up his first assist of the night. With just 0.2 seconds left, freshman John Haley (Shelbourne, VT) found the back of the net off a rebound. Freshmen Billy Sabia (Ridgefield, CT) and Jean-Marc Biron (Atlanta, GA) were credited with the assists.
Am unassisted goal by Tierney with 1:57 left proved to be the only scoring in the second stanza as the Falcons got to within one, 3-2. Nichols retook a two goal lead when Monte scored his ninth goal of the season 1:40 into the final period. Munson and Bojanowski provided the helpers, their second assists of the game. Sophomore Eric Cremer's (Chelsea, MI) power play goal at the 12:36 mark put a seal on the win. Munson and sophomore Colby Jones (Brockport, NY) picked up the assists.
The Bison will continue action next Saturday when they travel to Utica for a 7 p.m. game.
