Bison Upend Johnson & Wales, 77-65

, R.I. – Sophomore Curtia Humbert (Bridgeport, Conn.) scored a career-high 25 points and added 10 rebounds to lead Nichols to a 77-65 victory against Johnson & Wales in a non-conference contest at the Harborside Recreation Center on Saturday afternoon. With the win, the Bison improve to 7-3 on the year.

Sophomore Alexia Ramirez (San Marcos, Calif.) recorded her ninth double-double of the season to lead the way for Johnson & Wales with 16 points and 13 rebounds.  Sophomore Maria Valletta (Greenville, R.I) added 11 points and seven rebounds for the Wildcats.  Junior Johanna Santosuosso (Salem, N.H.) added 13 points, six assists and four rebounds in the setback for JWU.

 

Sophomore Margaret Lilly (Ashfield, Mass.) notched a double-double in the victory for Nichols with 14 points and 10 rebounds while junior MaryLynn Skarzenski (Woodbridge, N.J.) added a game-high 11 assists, seven points and eight boards in the win for the Bison.

 

The two teams traded leads early in the first half with the game tied 9-9 at the 13:38 mark.  Nichols then used a 10-2 run, capped by pair of free throws by sophomore Alena Jasinski (Canton, Conn.) to take the 19-11 lead with 10:28 left in the half.  Nichols led by as many as 10 points when a jumper by freshman Jessica Nelson (North Providence, R.I.) gave the Bison a 32-22 lead with 2:07 on the clock.  Johnson & Wales closed the half on an 8-2 run and trailed 34-30 heading into the locker room at halftime.

 

Johnson & Wales opened the second half on an 8-3 run, capped by a layup by Ramirez to take a 38-37 lead with 17:11 remaining in the game.  The Wildcats led by as many as seven after a layup by Valletta made the score 50-43 with 10:57 on the clock.  Nichols responded, however, and went on an 18-1 run, capped by a jumper by Humbert with 5:08 remaining in the contest.  The Bison led by as many as 16 down the stretch before taking the 77-65 victory

 

Nichols will play at Skidmore College on Tuesday, Jan. 8 at 6 p.m.
