DUDLEY, Mass. - The Nichols College softball team split a double header against University of New England on Saturday. The Bison will host a double header against Western New England College on Tuesday, April 3. The Bison's record is now 7-5 overall and 1-1 in the conference. Junior Lauren Person (Vernon, CT) had 4 hits on the day and pitched a complete game to record her seventh win of the season in game one.
Nichols scored its only two runs in the fifth inning when freshman Lauren Rozanski (Plainville, CT) singled then senior Jennifer Dudney (Oxford, Mass.) hit a two-run homerun. Person kept the Nor'easters in check only allowing one run on nine hits.
UNE scored its only run in the top half of the sixth inning. Junior Katie Morin (Lewiston, ME) led off the inning with a single to second base. Junior Sarah Hamel (Rochester, NH) came up and hit a double to left center that scored Morin to make it a 2-1 game. That was the only offense that UNE would get as Person retired the last six batters she faced.
In game two, the bison were held scoreless for the first five innings until senior Ashley Bannon (SSSSSS, CT) doubled up the middle to score Dudney who walked to lead off the inning. That would be the only offense the bison could get as they were held to just four hits all game.
UNE scored two of its three runs with two outs in the first inning. Freshman pitcher Ashley Wyland (Schenectady, NY) started strong retiring the first two batters she faced. However, with two outs in the inning a single by Morin and a walk to Hamel set the stage for senior Kelly Bedard (Keeseville, NY). Bedard hit a two RBI triple down the left field line which put the Nor'easters ahead for good. UNE added one more run in the sixth when sophomore Megan Gaedje singled home Bedard which sealed the 3-1 victory for UNE.
