DUDLEY, Mass.- Salve Regina came back from a ten-point second half deficit to defeat host Nichols, 66-62, in TCCC men's basketball action on Wednesday. Freshman Windell Hinkson (Groton, Conn.) scored a game-high 19 points to go along with seven rebounds for the Seahawks, who improve to 5-10 overall and 3-1 in the conference. The Bison snap a two-game win streak, dropping to 5-10 overall and 2-2 in TCCC action.
Both teams struggled offensively in the first half with the Seahawks shooting just 21 percent to Nichols 30 percent. The Bison went without a field goal for nearly six minutes of play as did Salve Regina at one point during the half. Senior Chris Vallee (Fitchburg, Mass.) led Nichols with six points and six rebounds off the bench. Junior Mike Walsh (Burlington, Mass.) led the Seahawks with seven.
The Bison built up a ten point advantage by the midway point of the second half as Salve continued to struggle from the field. In the matter of 2:33, however, the Seahawks were able to tie the game at 43 all. Junior Justin Woodworth (Ipswich, Mass.) and Hinkson posted back-to-back threes to make it a four point game, 41-37, while junior Joe DeSantis' (Trumbull, Conn.) lay-up got Salve to within two. A steal by Woodworth that lead to a Hinkson lay-in tied the game at 43-43 with 9:16 showing on the clock.
Senior Quinn O'Brien's (West Hartford, Conn.) three with 8:57 left gave the Seahawks their first lead of the half. Clinging to a two point lead with 2:30 left, Hinkson hit his fourth three of the game to give his team a five-point cushion.
Salve held a seven point lead with 27 seconds left but a pair of quick threes by freshman Garret Bishop (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) and sophomore Chris Paquin (Barre, Mass.) made it a two point game with nine seconds left. O'Brien secured the victory for the Seahawks by hitting both of his free throws with three seconds left.
Walsh and O'Brien joined Hinkson in double figures with 12 and 10 points, respectively. Senior Chris Goodridge (Merrimack, N.H.) pulled down a team-high ten rebounds. Vallee posted his first double-double of the season with team-highs of 19 points and ten rebounds in the loss for the Bison. Paquin added 15 while sophomore Ryan Wilcox (West Granby, Conn.) and senior Ron Powers (Millville, Mass.) each contributed six points and seven rebounds.
Nichols will travel to Colby-Sawyer for a 1 p.m. match-up this Saturday while Salve Regina will host Western New England College at 3 p.m. on Saturday.
