Dudley, Mass.- Just minutes after entering the game for the first time, freshman Jonathan Alexandre (Brockton, Mass.) helped give Anna Maria its first TCCC victory of the year, a 2-1 double overtime decision at Nichols in men's soccer action on Thursday. Playing a man down, Alexandre headed in a deflected ball off a throw-in 2:01 into the second overtime. It was his first collegiate goal. The Amcats are now 3-5-1 overall and 1-4-1 in the conference while the Bison, losers of their last three game, fall to 3-5-1 overall and 1-3-1 in TCCC play.
Senior Ryan Johnston (Woodstock, Conn.) made good on a penalty kick awarded to Nichols after Anna Maria was called for a hand ball in the box 15:46 into the match. The Bison held onto their 1-0 lead over the next 61 minutes until the Amcats' George Markapoulos (Paxton, Mass.) booted in a rebound off freshman Ara Derderian's (Bridgewater, Mass.) initial shot that Nichols' keeper Clayton Johnson (Williamstown, Mass.) saved. It was Markapoulos' fourth goal of the year. Anna Maria scored the goal despite being a man down after sophomore Zach Bzdyra (Hamden, Conn.) was issued a red card in the 59th minute of the game.
The Bison had their chances to score but had trouble getting their shots to fall on net. On the other end of the field, Johnson made some big saves to ensue the overtime but with a crowded box in front of him, there was little to be done about Alexandre's header in the second overtime.
Overall, Nichols out-shot Anna Maria 17-12 while Johnson posted seven saves. Junior Scott Burokas (Auburn, Mass.) stopped four shots in 100:00 minutes, only letting up the penalty kick. Sophomore Marshall Erickson (Shrewsbury, Mass.) was the lucky winner for the Amcats as he entered the game at the start of the second overtime.
Nichols will travel to New England College this Saturday for a 2:30 p.m. game.
