Pettoruto's Goal with 1:47 Left Lifts Field Hockey Past WPI, 2-1

Dudley, Mass.- Junior Lauren Pettoruto's (Windham, N.H.) goal with just 1:47 left to play in regulation lifted the Nichols field hockey team to a 2-1 victory over visiting WPI on Thursday. The Bison have now won five straight games to improve to 5-1 on the season while the Engineers fall to 4-4. Pettoruto has score four goals over the last two games for Nichols.

 

WPI grabbed a 1-0 lead late in the first half when senior Heather Hassett (Oxford, Mass.) scored off a corner taken by junior Nicole Maglione (Charlton, Mass.). While the Engineers kept the ball mainly on their end of the field, Nichols defense was superb, breaking up several opportunities.

 

The Engineers had a chance to take a 2-0 lead early in the second half when it was awarded a penalty shot but sophomore MaryKate Bednarz (Springfield, Mass.) was there to make the save. She finished the night with 11 saves.

 

Sophomore Emily Stearns (Mansfield, Mass.) tied things up at 1-1 midway through the final stanza with junior Brittany Case (Cambridge, N.Y.) earning the assist. Pettoruto chipped in the game-winning goal when the ball was deflected in front of the goal off a corner taken by Stearns.

 

Senior MaryKate Toomey (Worcester, Mass.) posted five saves for WPI, which continues action this Saturday against Wheaton. Nichols will host Regis College in TCCC action this Saturday as well with a 10 a.m. start time.
